Flu & Pneumonia
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 38.8 million Americans will contract the flu each year; with a reported 36,000 deaths caused by the flu.
Commonly referred to as the flu, influenza is caused by a virus that infects the respiratory tract (i.e. the nose, throat, lungs). Often mistaken for the common cold, the flu differs in its ability to cause severe illness and life-threatening complications.
Prevention
The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated.
The CDC recommends that anyone ages 6 months and older receive the influenza vaccine. Contact your health care provider or the Knox County Health Department for availability.
Along with vaccination, practicing proper hygiene also assists in preventing the flu. Remember to follow the 3 C's:
- Cover your cough and sneeze
